In August 2018, Dublin hosted the World Meeting of Families (Papal visit). Throughout the Pope’s visit there were a number of events held in Dublin City Centre, culminating in a final Mass in the phoenix Park, attracting almost 200,000 people who could only get to the event by using designated routes, the Luas lines being one of these. LUAS operations ensured that those passengers attending the event got there safely and on time and returned home that evening. This included opening a stop that has not been opened on the system to date for one day during the visit with temporary access and pedestrian crossings.
The entire event was a success and Transdev were commended by the National Transport Authority for their professionalism throughout the planning stages and their operations during the events.
